Hands4Hope Education Program After School Committee Updates (August-December 2019)

The Hands4Hope After School Project Committees are off to a great start, having completed several projects so far this year! If you are interested in joining any of these committees, please email melissap@hands4hopeyouth.org for more information.

The Kids Oasis Committee is a group of individuals who plan and prepare crafts, activities, and games, and lead the “Kids Oasis” outreaches at Green Valley Community Church. This outreach takes place two times a month during the “Common Ground” events, and is a place where the children of families receiving services can come to play, do crafts, and feel welcome. This committee:

  • Organized and implemented crafts and games for the Kids Oasis two times each month throughout 2019

  • Volunteered for the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce Brewfest, cleaning up after the event and raised $250 to help pay for craft supplies for upcoming outreaches (this was a joint fundraiser with the Homeless Committee)

The Project Birthday Committee plans, prepares, and volunteers for 3 Project Birthday events at White Rock Village, for the children of families who live there. This committee:

  • Planned & hosted 3 birthday parties

  • Planned a fourth party for November, December, and January birthdays and will host it in January

  • Created a “Kids Birthday Party Basket” for a fundraising dinner benefiting Hope House

The Homeless Committee helps plan, prepare, and lead Homeless Outreach events, which take place at Loaves & Fishes in Sacramento, and participate in smaller projects which help benefit homeless & low-income families in El Dorado and Sacramento Counties. This committee:

  • Planned and led outreaches in September, October, and December

  • Volunteered for the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce Brewfest, cleaning up after the event and raised $250 to help pay for food and other supplies needed for upcoming outreaches. This project was led by adult mentor Michelle Miranda, a former Hands4Hope youth leader who helped bring a Hands4Hope Club to Union Mine High School

  • Created a “Date Night at Home Basket” for a fundraising dinner benefiting Hope House

  • Is planning an upcoming outreach to work alongside local El Dorado county non-profit The Lighted Candle and their mobile laundry service for homeless individuals

The MAPS Committee (our partnership with Montessori Autism Programs and Services in El Dorado Hills) consists of 5-6 youth volunteers who participate as “playmates” for children at MAPS each week, and work on projects to benefit the facility. This committee:

  • Is working on a new Sensory Garden project/partnership which will begin in January. MAPS will design the layout, working with H4H volunteers to design art for the project (art mural on ground, decorating planter boxes, etc). MAPS/Hands4Hope will work together on the physical construction of the project (building planter boxes, helping fill with soil, planting, etc)

  • We are looking for more youth members for this committee to help with the design and construction of the sensory garden. We are also looking for an adult mentor for this committee! If you have experience with building or gardening, the MAPS Sensory Garden project could be the right fit for you! Please contact melissap@hands4hopeyouth.org for more information

The Winter Boutique Committee meets October-December to help collect donations and plan the Winter Boutique, a warm clothing distribution event which is open to families in need from El Dorado & Sacramento Counties. This committee:

  • Consisted of 12 youth this year, including youth project intern Pavitra Dobera from Oak Ridge High School. Madeline Vadenais was the adult mentor for this committee

  • Planned, organized, and hosted this year’s Winter Boutique the first two weekends in December, distributing 3,273 items to 118 families, a total of 442 individuals were served
