Despite only being in 7th grade, Avery Martin has managed to build up quite the Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference resume already! The Hands4Hope after-school committees opportunity begins in 6th grade, and Avery jumped right in as soon as she could, and now has participated in four after-school committees. Avery is also a leader in her on-campus Hands4Hope Club at Herbert Green Middle School, and has participated in Community Engagement Opportunities as well. So far, Avery has tallied more than 160 service hours! Best of all, Avery's mom also participates, making Hands4Hope a family experience. (Avery's mom, Nissa, is our Adult Volunteer Spotlight!)
"Avery brings her passion for helping others and her contagious smile to all of the Hands4Hope activities. She was one of our youngest participants to join our School Supply and Kids Zone Committees! Currently, she is a member of the Empty Bowls Committee and has been working hard to plan the fundraising dinner. She even recruited one of her friends to the Committee, and together has been working hard on creating materials to educate the community on hunger. Their work will be displayed at the Placerville Library during the month of February. We are so grateful for Avery and her commitment to Hands4Hope. The best part is that we still have many more years to work alongside her and watch her grow!" Yoko Kono, Hands4Hope Community Engagement Manager
Tell us about your Hands4Hope experience thus far.
I am currently participating in the Empty Bowls Committee and Essentials Committee, and I am also the president of Herbert Green Middle School Hands4Hope Club. In 2023, I had a busy summer participating on the School Supply Drive and Distribution Committee and the Kids Zone Committee.
How did you first come to be involved in Hands4Hope?
I saw flyers at my school and attended the introductory meeting. I was interested in trying something new.
What is a favorite moment so far from your time with Hands4Hope?
I really enjoyed making cotton candy at the treats booth at the 2023 Kids Zone.
What would you tell someone who is considering joining Hands4Hope?
I would tell them that the Hands4Hope Club really helps build skills and mindsets to help with future community services events. I love being part of my school club and the year-long and seasonal after-school Committees, and plan on continuing with that.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I have danced for almost 9 years, and have performed in the Sacramento Ballet's Nutcracker for 4 years. I also have been playing the trumpet for 2 years.
